GSP Is Not Worthy of Anderson Silva?
Jul 22, 2008 - 10:25 PM - by DGAF

Anderson Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, was recently a guest on ProMMA Radio and had the following to say regarding a dream fight against Georges St. Pierre:

Quote:
“That’s sound great, I think GSP is an incredible fighter. But I think GSP needs to prove himself. He still hasn’t had a successful title defense (at 170 lbs.). I don’t really feel that he deserves (a Silva fight) yet. Go defend your title a few times and then we’ll talk.”

Dana White Talks About Updates in Health Of Rampage Jackson
Jul 22, 2008 - 10:18 PM - by DGAF

What's going on with Rampage?

Dana White recently sat down with Yahoo! Sports and gave the fans an update on the health of former UFC light heavyweight champion, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, who had been arrested earlier this week and has been suffering from mental health issues:

On when Rampage is expected back:

"I think it's going to be a while before we get him back. I'm talking as a friend. It's a sensitive issue. Rampage, the UFC fighter, who cares about that. We're concerned about Rampage, the human being. What matters is his personal life."

On what might have caused Jackson's "rampage" leading to his arrest:

"He was up for four days and he was doing some crazy fasting thing. He was up for four days, drinking water and energy drinks, that was it. It's not good. Rampage doesn't do drugs. Rampage really doesn't even drink. This whole thing made no sense to me. (Then) when I got there it made a lot of sense."

On Rampage's newfound "fame" being the cause of his outburst:

"As this thing continues to grow and people will get more famous. Fame isn't easy to deal with. Harder for all the fighter are all the cling-ons. I can't police every fighter. As soon as something goes wrong I'm there and I'll help them."

Vitor Belfort: "I'd like to fight Frank Shamrock"
Jul 22, 2008 - 10:12 PM - by DGAF

Vitor Belfort is comming off a very impressive victory at Affliction "Banned", and what made it even more impressive is that he finished the fight with a Broken Hand. The old Vitor is not back, however the NEW and improved Vitor is here.

What is next for Vitor Belfort? He was asked this very thing over at ExtremeCouture, and here is what he said.

"We have a contract with Affliction. I'm looking forward to them giving me good fights. I want to fight the best. I'd like to fight Frank Shamrock. That would be an exciting fight. It is something I would like to accomplish. He used to be one of the best. I think we are both still top 10 contenders. It will be an explosive fight, let's get it on."

Only time will tell if this fight will happen, but at least Vitor has made the first move.

Fedors Next Opponent Named.
Jul 22, 2008 - 4:58 PM - by Radar

Quote:
The first event of Affliction is hardly finished that one does not speak already any more but about the next combat of Fedor. Whereas the speculations go good train as for the name of its next adversary, we decided to take the initiative by contacting directly the main thing concerned (Fedor in fact) so that it gives us his version of the facts…

This victory (too much) expeditious over Tim Sylvia apparently left Fedor on its hunger… “I want to catch up with wasted time and to fight this year more, entrusted Fedor to us. The next event of Affliction is planned for November, but we will try to advance it in October, so that I can suitably prepare my combat in Dream in December. “With regard to the name of its next adversary, Fedor was categorical: “it will be Andrei Arlovski."

I do not know yet the name of my adversary in Dream (probably Mirko “Cro COP”), but I then hope to face Josh Barnett in March in the USA.”

UFC Fight Night 14 Medical Suspensions and Injuries from NSAC
Jul 22, 2008 - 1:52 AM - by DGAF

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today issued its medical suspensions for UFC Fight Night 14: “Silva vs. Irvin,” which took place on Saturday, July 19 at “The Pearl” at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Surprisingly, the list of wounded is extensive. However, the only serious injuries appear to be those suffered by Brad Blackburn (thumb) and Anthony Johnson (eye).

Heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez popped up on the report with a possible knee injury. And if it’s confirmed he can be on the shelf for a little bit.

Fortunately, Brodie Farber –- the unlucky dude on the receiving end of a devastating Rory Markham head kick –- appears to be just fine.

Here’s the complete list of injuries and their medical instructions:

James Irvin – “The Sandman” is suspended until September 3 with a right cheek laceration and there in no contact allowed until August 19.

Hermes Franca – The charismatic Brazilian fighter is suspended until August 19 and there is no contact allowed until August 10.

Frank Edgar – “The Answer” is suspended until August 19 with a chin laceration and there is no contact allowed until August 10.

Jake O’Brien – “Irish” is suspended until September 3 and there is no contact allowed until August 19.

Couture Expecting a Court Ruling This Week
Jul 21, 2008 - 11:22 PM - by DGAF

Randy Couture told Fox Sports that he’s expecting a ruling to be handed down this week in the Texas court where his UFC contract is being examined. Will he be free and clear in October, when the no-compete clause ends? Or will the two fights left on his contract and the “champions clause” hold up? We just don’t know, and even if we did know, there’s still the business of appeals to wade through after the ruling. But there is some indication that Couture’s attitude towards his former employers may have softened:

Couture said his status probably won’t be finalized even after the ruling because appeals are expected from the losing party. But Couture said he ultimately expects to face Emelianenko, the renowned Russian fighter who scored a 36-second submission victory over Tim Sylvia in the main event of Saturday night’s Affliction pay-per-view show in Anaheim.

“When, where and with what promotion — we don’t know,” said Couture, who exchanged challenges with Emelianenko after the Affliction show. “It could happen in UFC. We just don’t know. I want it to happen. Fedor wants it to happen. In some way, shape or form, we’re going to make it happen.”

Aleksander Emelianenko Might Have Hepatitis B
Jul 21, 2008 - 11:17 PM - by DGAF

Various listeners of Sherdog Radio (and fans who bumped into Paul Buentello) are passing along the word that Aleksander Emelianko’s mysterious pull from Saturday’s Affliction: Banned event may be due to a positive test for Hepatitis B.

In its acute form, the viral liver disease can be treated and will leave a person’s system within two months. In some cases the disease turns chronic and the person remains infected, running the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer. No word yet on Emelianenko’s exact condition, though as long as he carries the virus he’ll be unable to fight in the United States, which means this could potentially be a career-ender. His last two professional fights — in July and October of 2007 — were held in Canada, which also requires blood tests for fighters, suggesting that Emelianenko acquired the disease relatively recently.

Fedor Re-establishes Role As Top Heavyweight
Jul 21, 2008 - 10:25 AM - by Sakuraba4life

Fedor Emelianenko erased any doubt about him being the top heavyweight in the world when he took out former UFC heavyweight titleholder Tim Sylvia in just 36 seconds at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Saturday night in Affliction's debut event, "Banned."

Emelianenko overwhelmed Sylvia with punches, dropping the 6'8” Miletich trained fighter to the canvas before taking his back and applying a rear naked choke that forced Sylvia to tap out.

"I felt all a long that I was quicker than Tim," said the Russian fighter during the post-fight press conference. "I wanted to use my quickness to my advantage and just immediately went for it.

"I felt comfortable in the stand up game," he added. "I have the best trainers in the world. And I know that if that's what it took than I was very comfortable doing that. They've trained me very well."

Emelianenko stated he'd like to fight three-time UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture in the ring following his quick win over Sylvia. Questioned about a match up with Couture, the newly crowned WAMMA champion commented, "Every fighter has their strengths and weaknesses. Randy's just a fighter that... [Read More]

UFC Fight Night 14 fighter paydays and salaries for ‘Silva vs Irvin’
Jul 21, 2008 - 10:13 AM - by Sakuraba4life

MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) has received the fighter payouts for UFC Fight Night 14: “Silva vs. Irvin” from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for the Spike TV event held on July 19 from “The Pearl” at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

And UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva was rewarded handsomely for his “favor” to move up to light heavyweight, earning a guaranteed $200,000. Brandon Vera – the other Octagon veteran who made his 205-pound debut – matched the “Spider’s” purse for his unanimous decision win over Reese Andy.

There aren’t many salary surprises on other than that – it all seems to look somewhat normal. Of course, there are several newcomers who earned the minimum for their participation on the card, which was put together on short notice to counter the Affliction: “Banned” pay-per-view (PPV) that same night.

Here are all the UFC Fight Night 14 payouts:

Anderson Silva — $200,000
James Irvin — $20,000
Silva defeated Irvin via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

Brandon Vera — $200,000 ($100,000 to show, $100,000 to win)
Reese Andy — $15,000
Vera defeated Andy via unanimous decision

Frank Edgar — $26,000 ($13,000 to show, $13,000 to win)

Affliction could become MMA heavyweight
Jul 20, 2008 - 12:51 PM - by Sakuraba4life

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The landscape of the mixed martial arts business may have changed Saturday night as the debuting Affliction promotion came out of its debut show with the potential for several of the biggest heavyweight marquee matches in the sport.

The myth of the quiet but unbeatable Russian, Fedor Emelianenko, turned into an undisputed reality as he destroyed former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in a scant 36 seconds in the main event at the Honda Center. Emelianenko, 28-1, who was the PRIDE heavyweight champion from 2003 until the company closed in 2007, became the first World Alliance of Mixed Martial arts heavyweight champion with the win.

It was billed as for the first undisputed world heavyweight title, although clearly “undisputed” is the wrong word to describe the first title created by an outside sanctioning body as opposed to a champion declared by a promotional company.

The industry already has two UFC heavyweight champions, in Randy Couture, the last champion who never lost, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who the company is recognizing as interim champion due to Couture’s resignation from the organization. There will be an Elite XC champion after a match with Antonio Silva vs. Justin Eilers on Saturday night in Stockton, Calif. Strikeforce also has a heavyweight champion in Alistair... [Read More]

Dana White Impressed By Fedor Emelianenko's Performance
Jul 20, 2008 - 12:39 PM - by Sakuraba4life

Quote from an interview on Yahoo! Sports:

"“It does (change my opinion),” White told Yahoo! “Tim Sylvia was a real opponent.”

Ever since Dana White was unable to lock Fedor up with a UFC contract a couple years back he has been openly vocal about his thoughts on the former Pride Champion. At one point he was quoted as saying "Fedor isn't even top five"

Considering Fedor took out Tim Sylvia lastnight in impressive fashion by defeating the big man by submissiobn 36 seconds into the first round, anyone that was questioning Fedor may need to change their tune a little.

What fights would you like to see for the 2nd Affliction card?
Jul 20, 2008 - 9:49 AM - by dasunder

I personally would like to see the following matchups:

Fedor vs. Barnett
Arlovski vs. Aleks
lil' Nog vs. Babalu
Belfort vs. Trigg (Maybe he can use his time better than announcing the event)
Rothwell vs. Sylvia
Rizzo vs. Buentello

and if they are able to grab these guys for an event:

Cro Cop vs. Overeem
Hunt vs. Kharitinov

What do you guys think? What fights would you like to see?
Maybe they'll toss in some lighter weights as well.

Jul 19, 2008 - 12:15 PM - by UTT

http://mmarated.com/blogs/blog/20080...t_off-310.html

MMARated.com has learned that UFC middleweight fighter Yushin Okami has recently suffered a broken hand and thus a potential title fight pitting Okami and Anderson Silva, once thought to be slated for September or October, has now been put on hold.

We've also learned that if Silva leaves the Octagon tomorrow night without any major injuries there are plans to book Patrick Cote as his next opponent, possibly this Fall as well.

Currently, the UFC has two October shows booked: UFC 89 in Birmingham, England, on October 18th and UFC 90 in Chicago, IL on
October 25th.

Rampage thinks he's God. Literally...
Jul 19, 2008 - 11:40 AM - by UTT

http://www.cagepotato.com/2008/07/17...-rampage-pt-2/

Earlier today, we scratched our heads over Dana White’s strange take on the Quinton Jackson situation, particularly the line:

“Last night when he got out, Rampage is very religious…yeah I’m dealing with it.”

WTF could that possibly mean, right? Well, according to CagePotato’s anonymous insider, it could mean something really freakin’ bad. Our source now tells us the following:

Rampage thinks he’s God…He had a falling out with his trainer a couple of days before the first arrest. Basically he has lost his mind and is talking very religious and is saying that he is God. This is the main thing I wanted to keep hidden, but with the second arrest and Dana talking it will come out regardless. He needs some serious help. I don’t know if you would call it schizophrenia or bipolar disorder or what have you, but whatever it is, basically it’s become impossible to have a conversation with him. He is delusional.

Again, this is second-hand information, and the only way to make a real judgment is to have an actual conversation with Jackson himself. But the chatter is not good.

Sort of... [Read More]
