| Classy Klitschko defeats Chagaev |
|
Jun 21, 2009 - 10:20 AM - by GCSD Fighter
|

Wladimir Klitschko defended his WBO and IBF world heavyweight titles by stopping the previously unbeaten Ruslan Chagaev with a 10th-round TKO.
Klitschko, who had been due to meet Britain's David Haye on Saturday, dominated throughout and had his opponent down in the second round.
The Ukrainian then cut Chagaev above the left eye in the sixth.
And after three more rounds of punishment, Chagaev's corner pulled their man from the fight.
It was a classy performance from 33-year-old Klitschko with the fight being held in front of 61,000 fans at Schalke O4 FC's Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, the biggest boxing audience in Germany in 70 years.
"Now he (Haye) has to get in line and earn his chance to fight for the world title. He has to do that with his hands and not his mouth." - Wladimir Klitschko
Chagaev, who had his fight with joint WBA champion Nikolay Valuev called off last month because of health worries, was drafted in as a late replacement for Haye, but was outclassed throughout.
Haye withdrew earlier this month after sustaining a back injury in training.
And Klitschko hinted after the fight that the pair could still meet, although the 28-year-old former cruiserweight king would have to wait his turn.

| Klitschko confirms Chagaev fight |
|
Jun 10, 2009 - 8:13 AM - by GCSD Fighter
|

Quote:
Wladimir Klitschko has confirmed Ruslan Chagaev as a replacement opponent for British heavyweight David Haye.
The IBF, WBO and IBO champion was due to face Haye in a 60,000 sell-out at Schalke 04 FC's Veltins Arena.
Haye had hoped that the fight could be restaged three weeks later after withdrawing from the original date with a back injury sustained in training.
But Ukrainian Klitschko was keen to retain the date and will face joint WBA champion Chagaev instead.
Problems with television broadcasters and further doubts over Haye's fitness also helped convince the Klitschko camp to draft in the 30-year-old.
"It's unfortunate that David Haye can't compete. But now I'm looking ahead and I'm excited about a particularly sporting challenge with Ruslan Chagaev," said Klitschko.
The Uzbekistani, unbeaten in 26 fights, shares ownership of the WBA crown with Russian Nikolai Valuev.
A title decider between the pair has been delayed three times with the WBA's deadline for a meeting due to expire at the end of this month.

| Josh Koscheck and Frank Trigg meet Sept. 19 at UFC 103 in Dallas |
|
Jun 04, 2009 - 5:01 AM - by putem2sleep
|

Top UFC welterweight contender Josh Koscheck (12-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) will indeed meet returning UFC veteran Frank Trigg (19-6 MMA, 2-3 UFC) at UFC 103 in Dallas.
Rumors of the bout have been widespread in recent days, and sources close to the event have indicated that bout agreements have been distributed and are expected to be finalized shortly.
While initial reports suggested the bout would take place on Sept. 26, and possibly in the U.K., the event will now be held on Sept. 19, just three days after UFC Fight Night 19 takes place in Oklahoma City.
Koscheck started his UFC career by winning seven of his first eight fights in the organization. The American Kickboxing Academy-trained fighter has since gone just 3-3, dropping hard-fought decisions to Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves, as well as a surprising TKO defeat to Paulo Thiago in his most recent performance.
Trigg fights for the first time in the UFC since 2005, when back-to-back losses to Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes led to his release from the organization. The Xtreme Couture fighter has amassed a 7-2 record since his release, including a four-fight win streak he'll carry into the September contest.
While the UFC generally does... [Read More]

| Dana White: Lyoto Machida vs Anderson Silva could happen |
|
Jun 02, 2009 - 8:44 AM - by putem2sleep
|

"Trust me: This is the fight business. You know what you do in the fight business? You fight guys. You find out who's the best. I don't ever worry about guys saying they won't fight. Everybody [who should fight] will wind up fighting in the end."
- Dana White tells Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole that a possible match up between Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida, should both fighters end up 1-2 in the UFC's light heavyweight division, would be just a matter of time.
Iole reports that Silva, who walks around at 215 lbs., may be moving up permanently to light heavyweight (205 lbs.) from middleweight (185 lbs.) before long.
Ed Soares, who manages both fighters, has stated that the two good friends and occasional training partners would never fight one another and that it would take $100 million to get them in the cage. Silva and Machida have both echoed similar sentiments in the past as well with Silva going as far as conceding the light heavyweight belt to Machida, stating, "The light heavyweight belt belongs to (Machida). That is his division."
However, with challenges and challengers at middleweight dwindling, Silva may be forced to rethink that strategy. He's already agreed to face former... [Read More]

| Patrick Cote signs four-fight contract extension with UFC; Eyes September Return |
|
Jun 02, 2009 - 8:32 AM - by putem2sleep
|

Four … more … fights, four … more … fights!
That’s exactly what former number one middleweight contender Patrick Cote will get after recently signing a contract extension with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), according to MMACanada.net.
Cote is currently rehabbing from major arthroscopic knee surgery after tearing his right meniscus during the third round of his main event fight against middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., back in October 2008.
“The Predator” actually suffered the injury just four weeks out from the fight and decided to push through it and challenge “The Spider” rather than withdraw from the card, which had already been ravaged by injuries.
He took a cortisone shot to dull any discomfort prior to the showdown and all seemed to be good until Cote tweaked the knee in the second round. Cote then came out for the third round and lasted just 39 seconds — he collapsed in a heap when the meniscus finally gave way.
Now on the road to recovery, the Canadian is happy and itching get back inside the Octagon.
Here’s a snip:
“I am very, very happy with the contract, so now I can just focus on my comeback…. I want to fight the best fighter as possible when I return. Wandy, Hendo,... [Read More]

| Kimbo making a comeback - The Ultimate Fighter 10 |

LAS VEGAS – "Kimbo Slice," the controversial heavyweight who in 2008 headlined the most-viewed mixed martial arts card in history, will be one of 16 contestants on the forthcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter," the UFC's reality TV series.
Dana White, the UFC's outspoken president, has repeatedly mocked Slice for his lack of fighting ability. Slice, whose real name is Kevin Ferguson, became a cult figure by competing in street fights that were posted on YouTube. Slice's "bouts" drew tens of millions of views and led him to turn professional.
He fought for the now defunct EliteXC, garnering massive media attention but getting mocked by White and others affiliated with the UFC for a lack of ability.
White has called him a "joke," a "bum" and "not a real fighter," among other less than kind descriptions. He said that Slice would "get murdered if he fought in the UFC" and suggested that his lightweight champion, 155-pound B.J. Penn, would "annihilate" the 230-pound Slice.
The UFC president has repeatedly insisted he would not allow Slice to... [Read More]

| Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic returns with UFC 99 bout vs Mostapha Al-Turk |
|
Jun 01, 2009 - 7:23 PM - by putem2sleep
|

As expected following recent comments by the heavyweight fighter, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (24-6-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) will return to the UFC and fight Mostapha Al-Turk (6-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at next weekend's UFC 99 event, the UFC today announced.
Filipovic, who replaces UFC newcomer Todd Duffee on the card, returns to the UFC after a three-fight stint in Japan.
The Filipovic vs. Al-Turk match-up has been added to the televised main card, which as of Monday morning, now features six televised bouts (rather than the usual five).
UFC 99 takes place June 13 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. The pay-per-view show, which is the UFC's first event in Germany, features a main event of Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva at a catch-weight of 195 pounds.
Filipovic, once considered one of the world's top two or three heavyweights, left the UFC following back-to-back losses to Gabriel Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo. In March 2008, he defeated an over-matched Tatsuya Mizuno via 56-second TKO at DREAM.1. Six months later he fought rival Alistair Overeem at DREAM.6. Overeem controlled the fight, but the bout was ruled a no-contest when he delivered an illegal knee to Filipovic's groin.
Three months later, in his most recent bout, Filipovic defeated 7-foot-2 kickboxer Hong Man Choi via first-round TKO.
Last month... [Read More]

| EA Sports to release MMA-themed videogame, "EA SPORTS MMA," in 2010 |
|
Jun 01, 2009 - 6:53 PM - by putem2sleep
|

THQ isn't the only videogame maker entering the mixed-martial-arts game market.
Electronic Arts Inc.'s EA SPORTS brand will issue "EA Sports MMA" in 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 platforms.
The California-based company, which has delivered massively popular videogame series such as "Madden NFL" and "Tiger Woods PGA TOUR," today announced some basic details of the game.
The announcement comes just weeks after THQ released "UFC 2009 Undisputed," the most sophisticated MMA videogame ever produced. The game, which features the likenesses of more than 80 UFC fighters, has won rave reviews from the videogame and MMA media. The title is part of a multi-year deal between the UFC and THQ.
Last week, at the 2008 Video Game Awards on Spike TV, UFC President Dana White announced "UFC 2010 Undisputed" will be released next year, signaling what possibly could be annual releases of the highly anticipated title.
EA Sports, meanwhile, will work with developers EA Tiburon on the "EA Sports MMA" title.
"Fans have been begging EA SPORTS to get into the cage, and 'EA SPORTS MMA' will put them in control of the sport’s unique combat experience while finally, in an ...interactive experience, capturing the raw intensity that... [Read More]

| Overeem brothers in club brawl; Alastair injured |
|
May 29, 2009 - 8:14 AM - by GCSD Fighter
|

Quote:
Current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem was expected to defend his title for the first time since obliterating Paul Buentello way back in November of 2007.
His undefeated challenger, Brett Rogers, was coming off a thrashing of “Abongo” Humphries at “Shamrock vs. Diaz” on April 11. He was ready to test himself against the menacing Overeem, and both fans and media considered it a done deal.
Then nothing happened.
No official announcement, no press conference, just silence.
Then the reason giving for “Demolition Man” being absent from the Showtime card was because he suffered a hand injury during training and was unable to be ready in time for June 6.
Well turns out there’s more to the story then that, according to Fighter’s Only Magazine.
He did injure his hand, but this was no training mishap. Golden Glory manager Bas Boon recently updated on the events that transpired.
According to him …

| UFC 104: Mauricio Shogun Rua signs to fight Lyoto Machida in October |
|
May 29, 2009 - 4:41 AM - by putem2sleep
|

The 2005 Pride FC Middleweight Grand Prix winner, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, earlier this week did indeed sign a bout agreement to challenge UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida, which will more than likely take place at UFC 104 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 24.
SuperLutas.com was able to confirm the rumored match up with sources close to the Brazilian’s camp.
Rua is coming off a first round technical knockout of former 205-pound champion, Chuck Liddell, at UFC 97: “Redemption” last month. He defeated Mark Coleman via third round technical knockout in a lackluster performance earlier this year at UFC 93: “Franklin vs. Henderson” to earn a crack at the “Iceman.”
It’s perhaps not the match up that most fans expected, especially when UFC President Dana White revealed over the weekend that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson would be the first to challenge Machida for his newly-won world title. But that all went out the window a few days later when Jackson apparently pressed UFC officials to settle a score with Rashad Evans via The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 first rather than compete for a world title.
That left Machida — who flatted Evans at UFC 98 to win the belt — all of a sudden without a number one contender … until now.
Keep in mind that White did not announce... [Read More]

| Rampage Jackson passes on title shot, chooses to coach opposite Rashad Evans on TUF 10 |
|
May 28, 2009 - 6:41 PM - by putem2sleep
|

Former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has decided to not take up company president Dana White on his offer to try and pry the 205-pound title from newly-minted division kingpin, Lyoto Machida, opting to take on the recently dethroned “Sugar” Rashad Evans instead.
Jackson and Evans were today formally announced as the coaches for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which begins taping its tenth season on the Spike TV network next week. It was a surprise announcement, but one that Jackson apparently was responsible for coordinating.
Here’s a snip from Jackson during a media conference call today on his decision via Yahoo!Sports.com:
“I had my mind set to fight Evans. I was actually there coaching (at UFC 98) trying to get him to win the fight. I want Evans he got in my face (at UFC 96), right after my fight. That was the wrong time to get in my face.”
Remember that Jackson and Evans were tentatively scheduled to collide at UFC 100 on July 11; however, an injury to interim heavyweight champion Frank Mir — booked to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 98 on May 23 — forced the promotion to shuffle the deck and move up Evans’ first title defense.
Jackson was offered the shot immediately following his unanimous decision win over Keith Jardine in the main event at UFC 96 on March... [Read More]

| Art of War 12 |

May 28, 2009 - 3:50 PM - by Tokyudo
|

The Art of War held its 12th edition this past weekend in Beijing, China. The promotion is working towards building itself up as the next big fight promotion in Asia, eyeing the void left by Pride that has been battled over by Dream and Sengoku in Japan.
While the fight card packed a strong international flavor, highlighted by the showcasing of several of China's top fighters, the crowd in attendance was just as notable. Littered among those in attendance were several fighters, managers, media personalities, and others, invited to witness the growth of the sport – and more specifically the Art of War – in China.
Art of War 12 was made possible by the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. His Highness was unable to attend, but his son and Sheika Maitha Bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum were present to host the evening, bringing with them an envoy of more than 300 guests from the U.A.E.
The main event of the evening showcased China's top star. Wu Hao Tian wasted no time wrestling his Japanese... [Read More]

| Frank Trigg Returning to the UFC |
|
May 27, 2009 - 6:14 PM - by DGAF
|

Veteran Frank Trigg (19-6 MMA, 2-3 UFC) is returning to the UFC after signing a four-fight deal with the organization.
The news recently came from a report issued by MMAJunkie.com.
Trigg recently turned 37 and went 2-3 in his first go-around in the UFC that lasted from 2003-2005.
Trigg made his octagon debut at UFC 45 where he lost to Matt Hughes. It was the first of two losses he would suffer to Hughes via rear-naked choke that still haunt Trigg to this very day.
Trigg’s final fight for the company was a submission loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 54. He is 7-2 since leaving the organization in 2005.
Trigg has fought for ICON Sport, where he defeated Jason “Mayhem” Miller to win the organization’s middleweight title in 2006. He’s also appeared in PRIDE, HDNet Fights, World Victory Road’s “Sengoku” event series and Strikeforce.
Trigg is currently riding a four-fight win streak, with six wins in his past seven fights. He is expected to make his return to the UFC this fall or early winter at the latest.
