| Ishida To Make U.S. Debut In Strikeforce |
|
Sep 08, 2008 - 1:52 AM - by DGAF
|

Top 10-ranked lightweight (155 lb. limit) Mitsuhiro Ishida will make his way from the battlegrounds of Japan for the first time in his seven-year professional career to face former NCAA Division I wrestler and rising Team AKA star Justin Wilcox in the cage at Strikeforce’s return to the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif. on Sept. 20.
Since jumping off to a shaky 2-2 start while fighting at 170 pounds, Wilcox has reset his game plan and reeled off three consecutive victories, including his Aug. 30 conquest of “The Ultimate Fighter” season five cast member Gabe Ruediger.
The 29-year-old native of Cincinnati credits the sudden turnaround to his recently formed alliance with San Jose’s Team AKA, the home of Wilcox’s Edinboro University of Pennsylvania wrestling brother Josh Koscheck. __“I love the way they train. They have that grind that I’m used to from wrestling in college so I feel at home here,” said Wilcox, who became the first true freshman in Edinboro history to win the NCAA national qualifying tournament.
“My college coach always said if you want to be a champ, you have to surround yourself with champs so I went out to AKA and haven’t lost since.”
During his collegiate career, the high-spirited Wilcox was turned on to amateur and, later, on to professional bodybuilding, a stint that helped mold him into the monstrous physical... [Read More]

| Anderson: “Paulo Filho is the best middleweight” |
|
Sep 07, 2008 - 4:10 PM - by DGAF
|

Pointed for many as the best pound for pound MMA fighters, Anderson Silva has no doubts on pointing his favorite athlete in his own division. “Paulão (Paulo Filho) is no comments, he’s complete. I think he’s absolute in this division, there’s nobody to beat him. In my opinion, he’s the best middleweight”, said Anderson, that doesn’t think about unifying the WEC and UFC belts in a fight against Filho.
“I would never fight with Paulão. We almost train together, we’re always helping each other and (Josuel) Distak is our coach. There’s no chance to happen. People can complain, scream, whatever, but it won’t happen”, said the UFC middleweight champion.

| Fabricio Werdum: "Lesnar is like a white-belt in there." |
|
Sep 07, 2008 - 3:34 PM - by DGAF
|

After back to back KO's against UFC heavyweight stalwarts Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera, Fabricio Werdum appeared to be in line for a title shot - that was before the return of Randy Couture.
With Couture back in the fold the UFC has developed what President Dana White has described as a kind of heavyweight tournament to determine the UFC's true heavyweight champion.
The UFC's heavyweight picture is a bit clouded as the result of their drawn out legal battle with champion Randy Couture. Couture left the UFC last year in an attempt to get out of his contract in order to face consensus number one heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko. But when the legal battle continued to drag on with no resolution in sight, the 45-year old Couture decided that it was time to return to the octagon.
"I prefer to fight in the ring, not in a court room," said Couture.
In Couture's absence however, the UFC was forced to crown an interim champion; with Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera besting former UFC champion Tim Sylvia for the belt.
Now the UFC has two champions where there can be only one. To solve the issue, White set up two fights; one between champion Randy Couture and contender Brock Lesnar, and the other between interim champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and contender Frank Mir. Werdum is on the outside looking in.[Read More]

| Rampage Vs. Wanderlei Close, Almost A Done Deal For UFC 91 |
|
Sep 06, 2008 - 1:55 PM - by DGAF
|

MMARated.com has learned that a light heavyweight bout between Wanderlei Silva and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson has been offered to both fighters for UFC 91 on November 15th and is very close to being finalized.
The addition of Silva vs. Jackson to a UFC 91 card that is already headlined by Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar for the UFC heavyweight title would put this pay-per-view in position to be the highest-grossing PPV in UFC history. Currently, UFC 66 holds that distinction since that event - headlined by a rematch between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz - grossed $5,397,300 in live gate revenue and just over a million in pay-per-view buys.
If this goes down it would be the third match up between these elite light weights. Silva took the previous two by brutal KO's and both men are looking for a shot at the title. Expect fireworks if this one goes down.

| Thiago Silva Withdraws from UFC 89 |
|
Sep 05, 2008 - 10:51 AM - by FHQ
|

Undefeated light heavyweight Thiago Silva (Pictures) has withdrawn from his Oct. 18 co-headlining bout against Lyoto Machida (Pictures) at UFC 89 “Bisping vs. Leben” in Birmingham, England.
An American Top Team representative confirmed a report from intheguard.tv, which said Silva sustained a back injury in training. The rep said the decision was made Thursday to pull the dynamic Brazilian striker from the card, and that Silva is expected to be back in play by December.
Silva, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who burst onto the scene in the Fury FC promotion, has racked up four back-to-back victories in the Octagon against James Irvin (Pictures), Tomasz Drwal (Pictures), Houston Alexander (Pictures), and Antonio Mendes (Pictures). The lanky 25-year-old stopped three of those four opponents with TKOs in the first round, with Polish standout Drwal the only one to hang on into the second stanza.
In May, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Silva (13-0) submitted Mendes with punches at UFC 84 “Ill Will” in Las Vegas.
A replacement for the undefeated Machida (13-0), who shut out former UFC champion Tito Ortiz (Pictures) with a three-round unanimous decision at UFC 84, has not been named at this time.

| Why PRIDE was so goddamn good |
|
Sep 04, 2008 - 4:28 PM - by nywrestler
|

Not to get nostalgic, but I saw this quick little highlight somewhere, hadn't seen it before and figured some of you probably haven't either.
I would get so much more excited for PRIDE shows than I do for UFC shows now. The quality of the cards was outstanding (for the most part), the fighters seemed quicker, faster, stronger. The matchmaking was good in most cases, and even when fights didn't make any sense, they were still compelling fights, or at least freakshow fights, which we never really get to see anymore. I miss the little Japanese refs with cameras on their heads. Dan Mirgliotta just wouldn't look nearly as cool with a camera strapped to his head.
Well, here it is. I know this might belong in the HLs and Videos forum, but hardly anyone will see it there, and I did elaborate on it enough to warrant its own thread, I think.
Thoughts?

| Rich Franklin Talks Moving Up To 205, Matt Hamill |
|
Sep 04, 2008 - 2:01 PM - by DGAF
|

Franklin On Moving Up To 205:
"I was talking to the UFC after the second [Anderson] Silva loss and they encouraged me to move up to 205. They told me my position there would be more appealing to them from a business perspective. They weren’t interested in a third match between me and Silva and they didn’t want me fighting contenders because I could eliminate possible title fights, so I was stuck in that I was going to be fighting people on the back end of their losses to Silva and I didn’t care for that gatekeeper position. After the Travis Lutter fight, I said I would try my hand at 205 again."
Franklin On Matt Hamill:
"He’s looked great, his success doesn’t surprise me at all. Matt’s an accomplished wrestler and a competitor. The first time I met him it was before he was doing MMA and I said when you’re done wrestling and all that -- he was making run for Athens games -- you ought to give MMA a thought because you could be good at it ... and before I knew it he was in The Ultimate Fighter and his only loss is a controversial one. He’s looked strong."
Franklin On His Game Plan For Hamill:
I think I gotta be quick on my feet. I’m giving up some weight so he might be giving up some speed. I need to use my footwork to confuse him and stick and move and stick and move and... [Read More]

| Houston Alexander signs five-fight UFC contract extension |
|
Sep 04, 2008 - 11:25 AM - by KO_King
|

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently inked light heavyweight Houston Alexander to a new five-fight contract extension, locking-in the services of the hard-hitting Nebraskan slugger well into 2009 if the promotion decides to keep him on the roster, according to WrestlingObserver.com.
Alexander was relatively unknown to the masses until he burst onto the scene with two destructive performances inside the Octagon, taking out top contender Keith Jardine in his debut back at UFC 71: “Liddell vs. Jackson” in May 2007 and then crumbling Alessio Sakara at UFC 75: “Champion vs. Champion” less than four months later.
“The Nebraskan Assassin,” however, quickly returned to Earth with back-to-back losses to Thiago Silva and James Irvin. In fact, Alexander didn’t last more than four minutes combined in those two bouts.
Despite his recent struggles, Alexander remains a fan favorite and a crowd pleaser win or lose. That’s more than likely the reason the promotion made the decision to keep him around.
He will have his opportunity to get back on the winning track against Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Eric Schafer at UFC Fight Night 15 in front of a hometown crowd at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha. Neb., on September 17.

| Anthony Johnson recovered from surgery, ready to return to UFC |
|
Sep 04, 2008 - 7:53 AM - by stupidMonKey
|

Anthony "Rumble" Johnson (5-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) has more right to feel wronged than most.
A controversial series of incidents in his July welterweight battle with Kevin Burns (7-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) at "UFC: Silva vs. Irvin" -- where Johnson was repeatedly poked in the eye -- led to a serious eye injury, a much disputed ending to the fight, and a loss to boot.
Johnson joined Tuesday’s edition of TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), to discuss his feelings on his highly contentious TKO loss to Burns, his recovery from surgery for a detached retina caused by the questionable blows, and his future in the stacked UFC welterweight division.
"When they said (Burns was awarded a) TKO, I was pissed," Johnson admitted. "But I had to stay calm because my mom was watching. I know things happen for a reason, and I am calm about the situation now."
Johnson said he feels no animosity towards the bout's referee, Steve Mazzagatti. But the Los Angeles resident still contends some form of action should have been taken against Burns.
"I think [Burns] should have been disqualified or at least had a... [Read More]

| Ken Shamrock: I've Got Enough To Beat This Guy |
|
Sep 04, 2008 - 7:43 AM - by stupidMonKey
|

Ken Shamrock was a guest on PWB Podcast Live and had quite a few interesting things to say regarding his upcoming fight with Kimbo Slice and many other topics. You can listen to the show by clicking HERE.
Some tidbits from the show include:
On the “story” behind the fight: “…You’ve got a veteran fighter, obviously at the end of his career…my best, strong days are behind me, but I’ve got enough to beat this guy. So, I’m looking forward to getting into this and exposing him for what he is. He’s a big, strong guy, and in the future, he could be something. But again, people are billing him as ‘the MMA,’ and he’s not. There’s so many other guys out there that are so more well-rounded in that heavyweight class, that for him to get all this recognition is just unfair to them. And it’s not that Kimbo’s doing anything wrong, I mean, he’s a guy that’s taking what’s given to him, you know, and if I was in his situation, I’d be taking all that I could get, too.”
On Kimbo Slice’s power: “I dunno man, maybe it’s just being ignorant and being hard-headed, because that’s the kind of person that I am, I’m very stubborn, but I call it like I see it, and I don’t see the guy having power. I see he generates a lot of power for a big guy, but I just don’t see it. I saw a lot of the guys he’s knocked out but he usually knocked... [Read More]

| Affliction Clears Roadblocks, Ready For More |
|
Sep 04, 2008 - 7:41 AM - by stupidMonKey
|

By now, Affliction vice president Tom Atencio has become used to swimming upstream against the doubters of his company. Since he launched Affliction Entertainment as the new fight promotion on the block in early 2008, he has faced naysayers at every turn, despite assembling one of the most talent-packed MMA cards in the sport’s recent history with “Affliction: Banned” this July.
None have been more vocal than UFC president Dana White. Since Affliction’s emergence, his not-so-affectionate moniker for the company, “the t-shirt guys,” has often been followed by a prediction of the company’s approaching demise. In a teleconference on Tuesday announcing Randy Couture’s return to the UFC, he was true to form.
“In this economy right now, losing money is a really bad thing,” White said. “There’s nobody out there looking to fund anything, nobody’s spending any money, nobody’s investing in anything. When you’re losing the kind of money that these guys are losing, you’ve gotta sell a lot of t-shirts to get back that money.”
Until now, White’s attacks have been limited to verbal slings and arrows thrown at Affliction. But during Tuesday’s conference call, in response to questions about various legal disputes surrounding the Randy Couture case, the outspoken president also may have hinted... [Read More]
